WURT

Here's where you can find information on my new tool, the Windows Update Repair Tool. Currently in beta, this is a tool to fix, among other things, Windows Update and Internet Explorer. While primarily targeting these two programs, WURT ends up fixing a wide range of issues from problems with McAfee products to missing 'Network Connection' folders.

Why I Built WURT

While working at my job as a technician, I've seen a large number of computers come into my shop with Windows Update broken. I started to research this, and discovered that a large percentage of the problems could be traced back to the integration with Internet Explorer.

I found out that the error message and number can vary between a logfile and what WU displays, and that each isue has multiple common fixes. I looked through the troubleshooter and the forums, and I came to a conclusion:

Why isn't this getting fixed automatically if we have the answers?

There's really no reason it shouldn't be, but it isn't... yet. So, in the meantime, I set out to make a tool that used that combined knowledge and turn it into wisdom - instead of having to search for your fix, why not just fix everything and look for each potential issue, since there could be more than one? I had a few philosophies, such as combining everything into one executable, and tried to make a solid, thorough program. While it's not done yet, I think this is a step in the right direction.

How WURT Works

WURT works by simply repairing anything Windows Update is dependant on. For example, WU depends heavily on Internet Explorer. IE depends on many other windows functions, which have other dependencies.

WURT fixes this by reregistering a large number of Windows' most crucial components. The internal list of the components to register and other fixes - like cache clearing, time adjustment, and registry checks - have been gathered from many other sources, including the official Microsoft WU Troubleshooter, the WU Forum, and other web research.

The result is a tool that essentially rebuilds large parts of the operating system. Since IE has been intergrated into Windows for political reasons, this often has drastic and far-reaching positive effects, such as fixing McAfee Home products, fixing damaged taskbars, fixing damaged network connections, and more.

.41 Beta (12/30/2005)
The latest beta version. Most enhancements are bug fixes, but a few new tests are implemented, such as the Firewall and Admin registry block tests.
Note: Please do not link directly to the file - instead, link to this page. This way, we can help make sure everyone gets the latest version. If you do try to link to the file, we will attempt to redirect to a new version.
I gotta know.... what are you waiting for? Save Internet Explorer for Windows Updates so that it still works for that, and use Firefox for all of your other browsing! It's faster and generally more secure.
